What is TOEFL Exam?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language commonly known as TOEFL is a globally accepted, systematized English language test to analyze international student’s English proficiency in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing as the English Language Test score plays a crucial role in the overseas education admission procedure. The TOEFL test certificate is accepted by more than 11,000 universities in over 150 countries, including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. TOEFL is one of the 2 leading English Language Tests across the globe.

Since its establishment in 1964, the ETS TOEFL test’s syllabus and test methods have matched universities and institution’s expectations. The recent revision was done in 2005, and the test is retitled the TOEFL iBT test. The test contains tasks that test if the candidate’s Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking skills meet the requirements of high-quality academic environments today.

Types of TOEFL Exam

The Educational Testing Service organizes the TOEFL exam in two modes.

Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)

As the name suggests, the TOEFL Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) is the online version of the TOEFL test for candidates looking to appear for their exam. The TOEFL-iBT test is the most favored type, with over 90% of students attempting the test in this internet-based format. The TOEFL-iBT test contains 4 parts, which are: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Students are asked to take up all the parts on a computer facilitated with a camera and microphone. Since the iBT test pattern doesn’t have a separate section to test candidate’s grammar knowledge, the writing section is observed in detail.

Paper Based Exam (TOEFL PBT)

TOEFL PBT is a paper-based English language test. The TOEFL PBT test format is a little different from that of the Internet-based Test as it also contains a separate essay section. Applicants who are not in favour of internet-based test can take up PBT. The listening section in the Paper Based Test has recordings that are shorter than the IBT.
