What is UK student visa & types?

The UK has primarily been one of the world’s leading educational destinations. Affordable education, internationally recognized courses, innovative, abundant research opportunities, healthy and safe communities, scholarships, and financial support makes the UK a student favorite. The country experienced a 95.77% of Student Visa acceptance rate in 2020. The 3 categories of visas are student VISA, child VISA, Short-term study VISA.

  • Tier 4 (General) Student Visa:

This is the standard student visa for students aged 18+. It is necessary for courses lasting for longer than 6 months. Students can apply for visas from inside or outside the UK.

  • Tier 4 (Child) Student Visa:

This is a student visa for children. It is for 4-17 year children who want to study at secondary school in the UK. This visa is valid for the length of the course, up to a maximum of 6 years, and it can be extended further.

  • Short-term Study Visa:

This is a UK student visa for any short study course. Generally, it generally lasts up to six months. If you are over 18, it can last up to 11 months for English language courses.

This VISA is also valid for short training courses and undertaking research as part of a degree. But, in this type of VISA the length of this visa cannot exceed the length of your course. This VISA is conditional on being offered a place on a course at a licensed place of study and proof of bank balance of the student.

Document Required for the UK Student VISA

  • The students must be 18+ years of age.
  • Consent from parents or guardians consents if you are under 18.
  • Significant proof of acceptance onto your course.
  • Genuine documents of payment of healthcare surcharge.
  • Students also need a tuberculosis test if they are coming to the UK for more than 6 months.
  • A valid passport.
  • Other travel documentation.
  • Proof of funds/money to cater to your living costs during your course.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies reference number.
  • Documents used to procure the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
  • Passport size color photographs.

UK VISA COVID Update

As of 11 February, 2022 candidates who are completely vaccinated are not required to do any COVID-19 tests before or after their arrival in the UK. The candidates who are not fully vaccinated must have a covid-19 test two days before their trip.

UK Student VISA Process

These are some latest steps for a student VISA by Indian students are as follows:

  • Step 1: Complete Online Visa Application

    • Online Visa Application: complete the online visa application form. Students have to print the application confirmation page for further process.
    • Photograph: Upload photograph at the online application form according to requirements.
     
    Major tips for student applicants:
    • International students who study a full-time undergraduate/postgraduate degree course on a Student Visa in the UK are allowed to work part-time or full-time.
    • Higher education institution in the UK has clearly defined the timetable for semesters and specific breaks for holidays. Students can work full-time at their job during these breaks if they wish.
    • Dependent Visa holders can work freely in the UK. But, some dependent VISA holders are not allowed to work as a doctor in training.
    • Dependents who apply for a visa must have enough money to live in the UK. It is £680/month for which the visa is valid, up to 9 months only. 
    • A bank statement/bank letter can be required to satisfy these requirements. Funds/money must be kept in the name of the student/applicant. 
    • If the UK Student Visa holder has an official sponsor, a letter from the sponsor may be submitted to meet the financial criteria.

  • Step 2: Schedule an Interview

    In most cases, interviews are necessary for visa applicants, with a few exceptions. The students need to schedule their interviews at the U.K Embassy or Consulate in the country where they live. Here is a table describing the timetable for interview processes.

  • Step 3: Prepare for your Interview

    The interview requires more time. It also varies by location, season, and visa category. So, students should apply for their visas before 3 months. It will help them to get their VISA on time. The student must pay the Non-refundable Visa Application Fee. If a student's visa is approved, they may be required to pay a “VISA issuance fee”.

  • Step 4: Documents Required for Interview

    • Passport
    • VISA Application and Confirmation Printout of the page.
    • Original Application Fee Payment Receipt.
    • Photo According to the format.
    • Certificate of Eligibility for Student Status VISA.
    • Interview Appointment Letter.

  • Step 5: The visa interview

    An interview with a consular officer will assess for determining the applicant's eligibility for the UK student visa. 

    • To be granted a student visa, the applicant/student must meet the legal/law requirements of the UK. 
    • Digital fingerprint scans are taken during the interview. After the interview, the consular officer will determine whether or not a second interview procedure is required. 
    • Some exams are required for applying for VISA to study in the UK. Students must have passed at least one/multiple tests before being considered for admission by the Universities in the UK. These include tests like SAT, GMAT, GRE, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. 

  • Step 6: Visa Processing Time

    A UK visa application takes 3-6 weeks to be processed. The applicant may receive a positive response to their application after processing. After this, the consulate will deliver the document. The visa can take more than one additional working day to arrive.

  • Step 7: Visa Approval

    Following the approval of the visa, the applicant might have to pay a visa issuance fee. Students must have to make arrangements for the return of their passports and visa. Look into the visa processing times for more information.
