Digital SAT Reading & Writing Section Overview

The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section is one of the two main sections of the exam, along with the Math section. The SAT Reading & Writing section measures your ability to read, understand, analyze, and write texts in English.

In this article, we will give you an overview of the SAT Reading & Writing section, its structure, content, question types, scoring system, and preparation tips. We will also tell you how ALLEN Global, the leading educational brand that assists students in preparing for the admission process of top international universities, can help you ace the Digital SAT with its specialized course.

How is the Digital SAT Structured?

There are two areas on the Digital SAT: Maths and Reading & Writing. For a total of two hours and fourteen minutes, students have 64 minutes to finish the Reading and Writing section and 70 minutes to do the Math section.

The Reading and Writing part and the Maths part are separated into two equal-length modules, and there is a 10-minute break in between. Each section’s initial module has a mixture of questions that are simple, medium, and difficult. The level of difficulty of the second module’s questions will vary depending on how well students perform on the first module.

Component Time Allotted Number of Questions/Tasks
Reading and Writing 64 mins (two 32-minute modules) 54
Math 70 mins (two 35-minute modules) 44
Total 134 98

Most of the questions are multiple choices, though some of the math questions ask you to enter the answer rather than select it.

On all questions, there’s no penalty for guessing. If you aren’t sure of the answer, it’s better to take a guess than leave the response blank.

Content of the SAT Reading & Writing Section

The SAT Reading & Writing section tests your skills and knowledge in four content domains: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions.

The SAT Reading & Writing section also tests your ability to integrate information and ideas from texts and informational graphics, such as tables, charts, and graphs.

The following table shows the content domains and the skills and knowledge they measure for the SAT Reading & Writing section:

Content Domain Skills and Knowledge
Information and Ideas Measures your ability to locate, interpret, evaluate, and integrate information and ideas from texts and informational graphics.
Craft and Structure Measures your ability to understand and use high-utility words and phrases in context, evaluate texts rhetorically, and make connections between topically related texts.
Expression of Ideas Measures your ability to revise texts to improve the effectiveness of written expression and to meet specific rhetorical goals.
Standard English Conventions Measures your ability to edit texts to conform to core conventions of Standard English sentence structure, usage, and punctuation.

The Reading Test has two types of multiple-choice questions: single questions and passage pairs. The single questions are based on a single passage or an informational graphic, and they test your comprehension, analysis, and reasoning skills. The passage pairs are based on two related passages or an informational graphic and a passage, and they test your ability to compare and synthesize information and ideas from different sources.

The Writing and Language Test has one type of multiple-choice question: expression of ideas. The expression of ideas questions are based on a passage, and they test your ability to revise and edit texts to improve their clarity, coherence, and effectiveness.

The passages in the Reading and Writing section range from 25 to 150 words. Passages represent the subject areas of literature, history/social studies, the humanities, and science.
