The Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship is a prestigious award provided by the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, which aims to support exceptional young Indians in enhancing their scientific, professional, artistic, and cultural skills through scholarships, awards, and grants in India and overseas. Since 1976, the Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarships have been bestowed upon Indian students to pursue full-time Masters, MPhil, or doctoral programs at highly acclaimed US, UK, and European institutions.The Foundation has formed joint-scholarship agreements with renowned institutions such as Imperial College London, the Royal College of Art in London, the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Trust), Sciences Po in Paris, and King’s College London (for PhD students).

Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship requirements

The required documents for the scholarship application include

  • a portfolio,
  • two letters of reference,
  • acceptance letter from the university,
  • resume,
  • SOP
  • institute‘s financial requirements,
  • proof of exceptional accomplishments in extracurricular activities across any domain,
  • a declaration for funding, and 
  • a passport(photocopy of the first and last page).

Eligibility Criteria for the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships

The following are the eligibility criteria for Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarships.

  • The scholarships are available to all Indian passport holders who are residents of India at the time of application. 
  • Candidates are expected to have a good first degree from a recognised Indian university.
  • Indian passport holders with an undergraduate degree from a recognised foreign university must have resided continuously, been employed, or studied in India for at least two years after their graduation. 
  • Applicants with postgraduate qualifications obtained from foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Candidates who are currently pursuing or have already begun their postgraduate education at a foreign institution are also not eligible to apply. 
  • Candidates must have prior admission to the institution and course of their choice at the time of application, and evidence of admission is required. 
  • Candidates with a conditional English language certification as part of their offer letter must attain that certification before applying for the scholarship. 
  • Candidates who have received a deferred offer of admission must have a valid offer for the academic year 2023-24 to be considered for the 2023 scholarships.
  • Applicants must not be over 30 years of age. 
  • The minimum academic grade required for Social Sciences, Humanities, Law, Fine Arts, Architecture, and related subjects is 65%, a CGPA of 6.8, or a GPA of 2.6 from a recognized institution. For Mathematics, Sciences, Environment, and related subjects, the minimum academic grade required is 70%, a CGPA of 7.2, or a GPA of 2.8 from a recognized institution.

The Application Process for the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships 

To apply for the scholarship, candidates must 

  • complete an online application process 
  • possess a valid passport
  • Upload two letters of reference, one from an academic referee, and provide official email addresses for both referees.

Each candidate is allowed only one application, and the online portal will not accept applications that do not meet the academic and financial eligibility criteria outlined previously. For applications submitted on 30th March 2023, the referee link will be active for seven days after submission until April 6, 2023.

The following steps outline the application process for the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship:

  • Go to the official website of the scholarship.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions, which can be found under the “Click here” tab.
  • Fill in personal details such as name, date of birth, and gender.
  • Attach a valid passport, resume, and photo.
  • Provide your mobile number and email and enter the verification code received on your mobile or email.
  • Fill in your correspondence and permanent address, including the city and state.
  • Provide details on your admission requirements, including the subject, course, and duration.
  • Indicate whether you have applied for any concessions or grants, except Inlaks, or for loans.
  • Tick the box indicating your English language proficiency.
  • Fill out the information about your university education, work experience, academic distinctions, grants, scholarships, and awards in extracurricular activities.
  • Write an SOP outlining your course, how it aligns with your career goals, and why you wish to study abroad. Also, indicate if the Inlaks Scholarship Board has previously interviewed you and whether you have lived in India for the past six months.
  • Fill out references and submit a declaration.

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships Selection Process

A self-governing The Inlaks Selection Committee is responsible for selecting qualified scholarship applicants. The selection criteria include not only the candidate’s past and current accomplishments but also their potential for future success. Applicants in the art and design field (fine and performing arts) will primarily be evaluated based on their portfolio.

The selection process for the Shivdasani scholarship involves three stages: 

  • evaluation of eligible applications, 
  • initial interviews with selected candidates from the first stage, and 
  • final interviews with successful applicants from the preliminary round.

Candidates who do not receive any notification from the Foundation by the first week of May should assume that their applications were not successful.

Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship Benefits

The Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship covers program tuition fees, as well as living expenses, healthcare, and one-way airfare, with a maximum award of up to USD 100,000. If the total cost exceeds this amount, applicants must demonstrate that they have the means to cover the additional expenses at the time of application.

Applicants who apply to Imperial College London, the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Trust), Sciences Po in Paris, and King’s College London can benefit from additional funding through the Foundation’s collaborative scholarships with these institutions and may surpass the USD 100,000 limit when applying. 

Candidates are not permitted to conduct field trips to India during their study tenure. However, this condition does not apply to applications made under the King’s College London partnership. If the scholarship is not initiated within nine months of being awarded, it will be forfeited.

Tip: Successful applicants should pursue other forms of funding, such as teaching assistantships and part-time employment, and they must disclose any additional sources of funding received to the Foundation.
